  • Smart Mobile Application Lives Up to Its Name

    RehabCare celebrated the rollout of its Smart mobile technology in September. Therapists use the patient care tracking application on their Apple iPads, iPhones and iPods, which belong to therapists for the duration of their employment. The devices have proven to be invaluable at the point of care and beyond.

    The Smart application, now in use at all nursing facility locations and most hospitals, optimizes patient care and scheduling. Built-in information filters in the program ensure that treatment plans are compatible with the patient’s diagnosis information and health care coverage.

    “The Smart application now allows our therapists to record clinical information during treatment, which helps us to increase efficiency and accuracy. Plus, the therapists are excited to have their own personal iPod, which encourages them to utilize this app as standard practice,” said Roger Byrne, RehabCare’s chief information officer.

    In addition to tracking patient care, therapists now have their schedules at their fingertips, and program directors can more easily assign planned minutes to specific therapists.

    “The Smart application is a great tool for our program directors to better plan patient care minutes, and ensure patients get the needed amount of care,” said Byrne.

    Mobile technology is not new to RehabCare, which began using devices like Palm Pilots and iPAQS in 2000. In its hospital facilities, RehabCare has been using iPhones for pre-admission screening for almost three years. Automating the process on the iPhones reduced a process that used to take hours to less than an hour.

    The Apple devices have been especially helpful. iPads, iPhones and iPods are popular with staff, and therapists routinely take advantage of therapy applications from the App Store. The application platform invites many possibilities for rehabilitation providers, such as the development of Smart.

    RehabCare implemented Smart gradually, beginning with ten locations and ultimately outfitting 200-250 locations per month toward the end of the project. Members of the IT team met weekly to ensure smooth installations and learn from each stage of the program’s deployment.

    RehabCare has plans to utilize the Apple devices for more than patient care in coming years – including internal communication, learning, and training and delivery of new clinical tools.
